Tulip Fields in The Netherlands

The best place to see this is in Keukenhof. The best time to visit is mid-April. The flowers can extend into May. Stroopwafel

Goudse stroopwafels

Zo nu en dan is het interessant dichtbij huis op zoek te gaan om leuke en plezierige dingen te doen. Ik kan natuurlijk naar de Efteling gaan of een dagje Amsterdam, maar als je het gevoel hebt van “been there…done that” ga je op zoek naar nieuwe dingen, naar zoete dingen. Zo kwam ik terecht in Gouda, bij Siroopwafel- en banketbakkerij van den Berg/Van Vliet. De ontvangst door Mike, de eigenaar van de bakkerij was allerhartelijkst. Ik kreeg een heerlijke kopje koffie aangeboden met uiteraard een stroopwafel erbij. Zoals velen ben ik gek op stroopwafels en koop ze meestal in de supermarkt o.i.d. Maar werkelijk dit was de allerlekkerste roomboter stroopwafel die ik ooit had gegeten. Deze echte Goudse wafels worden al meer dan 150 jaar met vakmanschap gebakken. De bakkerij is in 1864 opgericht en Mike is de 6e generatie die de leiding heeft overgenomen. Hij runt zijn zaak vol passie en plezier. In de bakkerij kun je behalve stroopwafel ook siroopwafel rotsjes kopen, heerlijk siroopwafel likeur en allerlei andere lekkernijen die gemaakt zijn van stroopwafels. Wist je trouwens dat in een van de oudste teruggevonden recepten, uit 1840, staat dat de wafels gebakken werden van deegresten en kruimels uit de bakkerij en gevuld werden met stroop. Omdat de wafels erg goedkoop waren werden ze ook wel ‘armenkoeken’ genoemd. In de bakkerij kun jij je eigen stroopwafel maken en als je wil kun je ook een rondleiding backstage krijgen. Zie onderstaand filmpje. Dus als je in Gouda bent ga langs de bakkerij van Mike. Je zult geen spijt krijgen en zal net als ik met een paar pakjes echte stroopwafels het winkel verlaten.

Den Bosch

Beautiful Den Bosch

The Netherlands is packed with old cities, many of them are well preserved and offer a glance at the way people used to live. One of this city is ’s-Hertogenbosch. Dutch people seldom use the formal ‘s-Hertogenbosch but rather the colloquial Den Bosch. Which means “The Forest” by the way. The history of Den Bosch start in 1185. You can read here more about the history. Den Bosch has two dynamite sights: a remarkable church Sint Janskathedraal and a great museum dedicated to its namesake artist. It also has unique tunnel canals you can explore. This Sint Janskathedraal is worth a visit. The building is incredible and has an interesting history. Did you know that this is the only large Gothic cathedral in the Netherlands? Also the inside has a special chapel for the Holy Mary and the candles and flowers show how much people adore her. Beside wandering around in this beautiful city you can also taste the local beer and eat the famous Bossche Bol. This traditional Den Bosch pastry treat can be ordered on every café terrace. A Bossche Bol is a kind of huge cream puff covered in dark chocolate. Jules, the owner of the Royal bakery has the best Bossche Bol in the city. They make their Bossche Bol fresh everyday. You can also learn how to do it yourself. They organize every day workshops. You will learn step by step how to make your own Bossche Bol. Check their website for more information. Their website is only in Dutch but you can send them also an email. To explore the city you can take a boat trip or a city walk. Or you can combined a boat trip and city walk in ’s-Hertogenbosch. What ever you choose…it’s totally worth visiting this beautiful city.
